Class of 1960

Listen to Elvis  ”It’s Now or Never”

1960 to 2010 – fifty years – a lifetime or yesterday – seems like both.  Our class was the first of the decade that changed history.  We grew up liking Ike and worrying about The Bomb – we were soon thrown into a long war, three assassinations, a New Society, Woodstock – all while we are starting careers, marriages, families.  We have not been back together since 1960 – our 50th reunion is just around the corner (July 2010) and we are hoping to have all of us back together for this momentous occasion!  Mark your calendars!

Do you remember?  1960 was the year that Cassius Clay won the Olympic gold medal in boxing; Berry Gordy borrowed $800 and started Motown records; 850,000 “war babies” entered college and overcrowded the dorms.  Captain Gary Powers U-2 spy plane was shot down over Russia; Khrushchev at the UN pounds his shoe on the table in anger; John F. Kennedy won the presidency and democrats swept the Congress.  New words in 1960:  anchorman, sit-in, cosmonaut, laser, compact car, Astroturf, felt-tip pen, Rayon.  The Academy award for best picture was “The Apartment” and the top movie money maker was Psycho.  The Dow-Jones high was 685; unemployment was 5.5%; the cost of a new home was $16,500; a first class stamp was 4 cents.
